WIELD has three core initiatives aimed at
bringing greater visibility and equality to
African women. The first is the
African Womens Fellows
Initiative that
includes identification of potential female
leaders, preparation of female fellows,
promotion of fellows efforts, and support of
fellows in achieving positions of national and
international leadership. One thousand senior
and junior fellows, mentors and leadership
summit participants with interests or experience
in business, politics, mentoring, community
advocacy will be selected to take part in a
five-year pilot program. Women and girls
selected as fellows progress through three
phases that include 1) education and training,
2) mentoring, networking, and professional
internships, and 3) support and resource
assistance.
The pilot program recruits women throughout
Africa as well as refugees and immigrants who
have settled in the United States and United
Kingdom. The second initiative is
WIELDs Research
Initiative, which conducts empirical
research to stimulate dialogue that can lead to
policy changes. Prominent professionals, alumni,
or current participants are invited to conduct
research on African womens leadership issues to
help develop a broad base of knowledge about
African women leaders that takes into account
different leadership styles and perspectives
throughout Africa and tracks emerging
sociopolitical challenges and opportunities
facing women in Africa. The third initiative is
WIELDs African Womens
Leadership Conference, which is hosted
annually to establish an interdisciplinary
African community committed to the development
of women leaders.
