Women’s Initiative for Empowerment and Leadership Development (WIELD) was launched in March 2004 as an innovative program by Women’s Initiative for Self Empowerment (WISE), Ghana. Women’s Initiative for Self-Empowerment (WISE) was established in 1999 to respond to the increase in reports of violence against women and children, limited public awareness of and collaboration among the few organizations set up to provide services, and the lack of counseling and support programs to meet the psychological needs of survivors of violence.

The WIELD FOUNDATION is a non-profit organization operating in Ghana and in the United States with the mission to promote women and girls’ inclusion and active participation in leadership in Africa. To achieve its mission, WIELD is pursuing proactive strategies to develop and empower women and girls to take on leadership roles in private, public and social sectors.

Mission: THE WIELD FOUNDATION to promote and girls’ inclusion and active participation in leadership in Africa.

Vision: THE WIELD FOUNDATION envisions a society where women and girls are included and participate in leadership and decision making in all spheres of life

Activities: WIELD prepares and promotes women and girls for leadership by providing training, mentoring, networking, exchange, research, and community service opportunities

THE WIELD FOUNDATION believes that:

  • The success of an organization, community, or society depends on inclusive leadership models that leverage the potential and experience of all its human resources.
  • The full and active participation of women in leadership is a pre-requisite for positive change and development in Africa and the African Diaspora.
  • African women leaders and professionals face particular cultural, structural, and systemic challenges for which they need extra skills and support to overcome.
  • Most of the qualities, skills, and principles required for effective leadership can be acquired through learning and therefore must be taught.
